ONORATA-VERSE BACKGROUND:
Lenalee Lee. Sixteen-years-old. Chinese. Sweet girl with a touch of darkness about her. Adopted daughter of a wealthy, distinguished family. And an exotic dancer for a high class nightclub.
Her story begins in the slums of the city, where she lived with her older brother, who brought her to Italy with him from China when she was just a baby. Even as a child, she was a beauty, and her brother worked hard to protect her from those who would take advantage of it. Unfortunately, her beauty attracted the wrong kind of people who wanted to make a profit out of her physical appeal. They kidnapped her when she was around six-years-old, putting her on a child market and selling her to the highest bidder.
Lenalee got lucky. Extremely lucky, as if the old saying that fate smiles only upon the beautiful is true. The man who bought her had done so out of pity, saving her from a fate worse than death, and took her to a kind of world she never knew existed. A world of lights and wealth and beauty around every corner. A world of silk and perfume of the rich, not mud, disease, and the stench of the sewers. The man who bought her was the father of a wealthy family known as D’Angelo that ran a night club in one of the city’s most distinguished districts, where only those with enough to offer are allowed to enter. In the beginning, she was treated somewhat roughly, as she had tried on many occasions to escape back to the slums and to her beloved older brother, her young mind not understanding that she had been given an opportunity only thousands dream of. The rough treatment from her new family was more out of affection than malice, for Lenalee was a very difficult child at first, refusing to be molded to a lady of status. As she grew older, however, Lenalee began to realize her situation, and that she could use it to her advantage. As she developed into a very disciplined and distinguished young lady, her family could not stop showing their affection, and to be honest, Lenalee grew to love them in return.
Like many other children of her status, Lenalee was home-schooled by well distinguished tutors and governesses. She had been taught many things aside from history and reading; poetry, dance, etiquette, and even economics and politics. One with a brilliant mind, she excelled in all her subjects. Being the beauty she is, Lenalee was also taught how to defend herself, particularly in fencing, martial arts, and shooting. Lenalee actually carries a Kel-Tec P-32 semi-automatic pistol, hidden in a holster attached to her leg. However, she rarely uses the weapon, and instead relies on her strong legs to get her out of a unfavorable situation. This girl can kick, and the deadly force behind the blow is one to be reckoned with.
Once Lenalee Lee had been a little girl in the slums. Now Lenalee D’Angelo is a young woman possessing a high-class education, wealth, and an almost irresistible Oriental dark beauty. She has a voice like a siren; her shows are the highlight of the club’s night. She is an exotic dancer, not a prostitute, not a stripper; she will strip but it is a tasteful art; this is the key difference. She sings and dances only for those worthy enough to come through the club’s doors. The club she works at is high class, for those of wealth and status to escape the crass of the slums and be with their own kind, for the dons and their families to do business and be entertained.
So far, she has maintained her purity, for it seems that the knowledge of her virginity considerably adds to her appeal as the club’s key player, an untouchable blossom, as well as her Asian characteristics: almond-shaped eyes with deep violet irises and soft complexion framed by midnight black hair giving life to many a man’s secret fantasy. Maintaining her virginity was more her family’s wish than her own, considering they want to keep her pure for suitable husband one day. This does not mean Lenalee isn’t willing to give up her body if she has to, though she does find the idea of sex somewhat intimidating mostly because she cringes at the idea of being overpowered. As much as the idea still lightly lingers pleasantly in her dreams, Lenalee had long ago given up on finding true love. And if a husband happens to be chosen for her in the future, she will accept him out of duty to her family.
Personality wise, Lenalee still maintains her cheerful, positive, and no-nonsense attitude that she does in D.Gray-Man. But she is darker now, not as naïve, and not as shy about her body. The trauma of being taken from her brother has given her a slight touch of madness, and talking with the upper-class on their level has served to increase her darkness. She is still selfless in regards to caring for others, but if the situation arises, she is not beneath using others for her own purposes. Being an exotic dancer and thus so exposed to this beautiful and deadly world, she knows how the game is played, what hands to show and what to discard. She uses her occupation to search for her older brother, and knows all the key tips and tricks to weeding out information due to years and years of practice. Because of this, she knows many things that most others don’t, valuable information that many would kill to possess.
